Commentary : Pakistan blasts Dion for suggesting NATO role

Stéphane Dion, a leader of the Canadian Liberal Party, suggested that NATO should intervene in Pakistan if the world wanted to bring peace in Afghanistan. He made this remark after his brief visit to Afghanistan.

Pakistan has angrily responded to his statement saying that he did not understand the ground realities.

In my opinion, he made a very irresponsible statement. The truth is that western allies failed to bring peace in Afghanistan because of their follies. They have started blaming Pakistan to hide their failures. The western countries did not pay attention to the reconstruction of Afghanistan. The aid money that they promised was never given to Afghan government.

Western leaders should not make such irresponsible statement because  it will make Pakistan angry. They will stop cooperating with NATO in Afghanistan. Mr. Dion should realize that Pakistan is not a banana republic. If they can kick Russians out of Afghanistan , they can kick out NATO too.

I’m sure that’s what many in Pakistan want others to believe. But Afghanis and the NATO troops on the ground know quite well that the border areas of Pakistan are a training ground for Al Qaeda and the Taliban. When their troops drive the Pakistani Army out it isn’t really part of Pakistan any more, so why shouldn’t NATO troops intervene in support of Pakistani sovereignty?
